Iridium oxides(iridates) have strong spin-orbit coupling and strong electron correlation. The interplay of these two effects may give rise to interesting electronic phases, including high-temperature superconductivity and quantum spin liquids. Experimental evidences of these novel phases have indeed been observed in iridates recently. I will first introduce the basic electronic properties of iridates, and then present a series of our theoretical studies on these materials, including: theoretical prediction of d-wave high-temperature superconducitivity in Sr2IrO4; model and explanation for the unusual magnetism in Tb-doped Sr2IrO4; first-principle study of the magnetic interactions in quantum spin liquid candidate Na2IrO3; recent proposal of quantum paraelectricity induced quantum spin liquid phase in H3LiIr2O6.
